We’re about to set off on a 20 hour drive with a precocious six year old (and a two year old who repeats everything) and I’d love to find a book to pass the time. It does not necessarily need to be a book they are interested in, as they have their own headphones and audiobooks, but it needs to not have sexual content, too much violence, or profanity.
We’ve tried Dickens in the past, but he’s so wordy we would get distracted and lose the plot. So classics would be considered but they do need to be a little more in the gripping side.
I enjoyed the Thursday Murder Club audiobooks, but had to turn them off when my six year asked too many questions about murdering people.

The House in the Cerulean Sea and Somewhere Beyond The Sea by TJ Klune would be appropriate and fun audiobook listens.
If you like baseball, try Summerland by Michael Chabon
Last winter my husband and I listened to the first Harry Potter book for a portion of our 14 hour trip with our 4 year old and we really enjoyed it while she mostly just tolerated it lol
Nobody knows about this one, but “The Fast and the Furriest” by Andy Behrens. The Chicago references and accents are the best. Listen to the sample but on Audible to see what you think.
Here’s a blurb I pulled from elsewhere:
Kevin Pugh is a 12-year-old couch potato. Cromwell is his part beagle, part potato chip dog.
Kevin’s looking forward to spending his summer doing as little as possible. Unfortunately, Kevin’s father, former Chicago Bears star player/super-sports fanatic, Howie Pugh, feels differently.
So does Cromwell, who has suddenly and mysteriously developed a fascination with agility competitions: running up seesaws, leaping over hurdles, soaring through hoops (sometimes).
If he has to do anything, Kevin would rather do something for newly obsessed Cromwell, but dog agility lessons do not constitute a sport in his father’s mind, so football camp it is.
Until …
Try Sundays With Harold. It’s an audiobook, too.
