    1. There was Bunnicula? I can’t remember if it was scary or not but it was available in an elementary school library when I was a kid 🤷‍♀️ looks like it has a series with it

      And a classic Goosebumps

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab, The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier, 100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson. Coraline by Neil Gaiman is a perpetual favorite.

Also there are a few authors who write middle grade horror: K.R. Alexander, Mary Downing Hahn, and Margaret Peterson Haddix (more thriller than horror though).

    3. The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher. Just enough horror for a kid. Summer in Orcus also has some horror elements.

BE AWARE that Kingfisher also writes horror for adults. Do not just buy any Kingfisher book without researching it first.

The Jumbies series by Tracey Baptiste is a wonderful horror series written for middle school aged children. It’s based on Caribbean mythology and folklore and has lots of adventure and thrills. I think I remember the protagonist is a young girl of about the same age as your niece.
