Hey! Discovered this year that I really enjoy what I've been calling "Dad fiction"… it started with Mystic River by Dennis Lehane, then Richard Preston, and most recently I finished "The Terror" by Dan Simmons (which is gearing up to be my favorite book of the year). Definitely a genre out of my wheelhouse as a college student, but am looking for similar novels!
I enjoy themes of exploration, grittiness, adventure, extreme circumstances, and am looking to get into sci-fi. No Clive Cussler.
Please lmk or drop your favorite "Dad" novels!
THX!

The Painter by Peter Heller
The north water — Ian McGuire. Bonus — there is also an AMC show for that one
Pretty much anything by Frank Perretti
Anything by Bernard Cornwell. I recommend his Arthurian trilogy.
Lonesome Dove might be a good one. Gorgeous writing and great characters
So, one recommendation I don’t see is the Aubrey-Maturin novels (aka the Master and Commander series) by Patrick O’Brien. I got pulled into these *hard* last year and I love them. The first one is just called *Master and Commander*.
I’ll edit in for sci-fi suggestions that are “dad-ly.” However! I will suggest:
*The Expanse* series
*The Scourge Between Stars* by Ness Brown
