Hi everyone!
I'm looking for the perfect Christmas gift for my mum and could use some help. She's an older lady who really enjoys family sagas, books that paint a vivid picture of life and relationships in a specific place (e.g., small towns, foreign countries), and books that explore the "messiness" of human relationships, particularly if written from a woman's perspective.
Examples of authors she likes are Elizabeth Strout, Sally Rooney, Jonathan Franzen, Elena Ferrante, Annie Ernaux, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Catherine Dunne.
Bonus points if the book was originally written in English, since my mum speaks it as a second language and enjoys a good challenge.

Confederacy of Dunces – it’s protagonist is a male but gives a very humorous nice slice of New Orleans. A bit more emotionally restrained than Stroud/Ferrante but big in humour, satire and location.
The End of the Story by Lydia Davis
The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
The Signature of All Things by E. Gilbert
