I’m looking for a gift for someone who wants to read about people a century or two ago accomplishing amazing things despite harrowing odds. The element of optimism is crucial – terrible things can happen along the way, but ultimately it needs to be a tale of triumph.

The scale can be grand (Arctic expeditions) or smaller (The Boys in the Boat being an example of something they enjoyed).

Time period would probably be the 1800s through mid-1900s, with some wiggle room.

    Thank you!
