Just finished Stoner at long last — what a beautifully moving book about a seemingly insignificant life! I’d love recommendations for other books with that kind of sharp writing and emotional depth. All recommendations welcome, and thanks in advance!

The Easter Parade and. A Good School by Richard Yates
Remains of the Day Ishiguro
Fat City by Leonard Gardner
Angels by Denis Johnson
Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connell
Ironweed by William Kennedy
William Maxwell writes beautifully about the seemingly mundane but quietly seismic.
Time will darken it, & so long see you tomorrow are two fine examples 👍
Alice Walker’s first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland holds a very special place in my heart
Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali
He also wrote Butcher’s Crossing – a western about hunting buffalo which is equally good.
I think a similar book to Stoner that I’ve read is We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas.
