I recently finished The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and it was one of my favorite series ever. Now I'm ready to dive into another big series and I can't really find anything. I'm looking for a book series that's at least somewhat modern, preferably written in the last 30 or so years, and preferably finished, so we don't end up with a situation like ASOIAF. I would like a long series of several big door-stopper books, with all the classic fantasy things like a dark lord and a magic system and guys on horses with swords and stuff. NOT ROMANTASY.

I've tried to read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, and I really like his writing and think his world building is top tier, but I just couldn't finish it. I got about 40% through and gave up because he's constantly hopping between different storylines that don't seem to connect and every time something started to get good with one storyline, we'd jump away to another one. It was really frustrating and killed my enjoyment of the book. But other than that, it seems like the sort of thing I would have liked.

I'm currently reading the first book in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steve Erickson, and while it's good, the bug hasn't really bit me yet. I'm about a third of the way through and I'll probably keep chipping away at it, but I'm looking for something else right now.

I also tried to read the Black Company series and quit after the first or second chapter. It was too edgy and morally grey for me. Like, I get it, there are no good guys and everyone is a cold-blooded killer. Very cool. (Eyeroll emoji.) And the author seems to write in such an "efficient" style that he was almost skipping over whole scenes in a line or two. It would be like, "Then weapons were drawn and when it was all done, six bodies lay on the floor." Okay, but I wanted to read that. That's why I'm here.

I've read Patrick Rothfuss's work and greatly enjoyed it, but he won't finish the damn series! If he ever finally does, I'm sure I'll read it and it'll be great. I have also enjoyed the Harry Potter series and some of Ursula K Leguin's work in the past.

Anyway, if anyone could recommend a big, epic fantasy series with several large books, written in the last 30 years or so, I'd really appreciate it.
