About me: I admit I'm not a very bright person so anything that's remotely complex I have a hard time following, I don't really read books and the rare times I do read something it feels like a chore because I get bored really easily

e.g. I dropped Crime and Punishment because I could Not Understand A Thing that was being written. I've read the entirety of Kafka on the Shore, IQ84, and Norwegian Wood and to this day I still don't know what the author was trying to convey there, I got Nothing out of it besides "these people are so weird"… So yeah that's how dumb I am (Also I found every single one of them tedious to read I'm sorry…)

    BUT

These two books I randomly picked up, I really enjoyed for these reasons:

The Book Thief: Very thought-provoking, really loved how there were all these symbolisms through which the author conveyed their message but they weren't too hard to catch nor interpret whatsoever. Really loved the concept of being told the story through Death's point of view.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: I just really enjoyed how easy to read it was and how fun and quirky the writing and typesetting is, which really helped me stay interested.

Thank you so much in advance!

Also you’re not dumb, ffs. Crime and Punishment is long and boring. IQ84 is tedious. Kafka on the shore is weird. And I have a degree in lit. So no you’re not dumb. Just because it’s a “classic” doesn’t mean shit. Are they great examples of incredible writing and human observation. Sure. Are they books that most people read casually for fun? NO! Some people lie about it, but most people don’t read books like that for fun. If they did, James Patterson wouldn’t be a billionaire.

Read what you want and what you like, Read widely, read popular, don’t bother with giant 1000 page classics if you don’t want to. If you want to read classics, try Frankenstein, The picture of Dorian Grey, The Monk. Short, exciting books. Russian literature is vodka-fueled suicidal ideation. and as one of my professors once said “Welcome to European literature. If you’re not depressed now, you will be after”.
