I am looking for an audiobook for me and my husband to listen to on a long road trip we have coming up (12 hours each way). While I am a voracious reader, he hasn't read a book since high school. I got him to listen to Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill on a road trip a few years ago and he really liked it.
The audiobook needs to be highly engaging to keep him interested. I'm happy to listen to anything so I will describe what is best suited for him, since that's the deciding factor on what we pick.
Some of his favorite movies are The Conjuring, Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw, Rambo, Rocky, Payback, Deuces Wild, Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Memento, Inception, Mothman Prophecies, Two Lane Blacktop, The Warriors.
My own genre preferences are more fantasy, sci fi, paranormal, so if there's any of those elements that's great but not necessary. I mainly want him to enjoy it.
Duration doesn't matter, neither does platform. Full cast is preferred, but not necessary. Graphic Audio would be nice but not necessary. We will be listening at 1x speed.
Help!

Project Hail Mary
I’ll give the obligatory Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir suggestion.
Also maybe In Cold Blood – Truman Capote – kind of the original true crime so almost like a true crime podcast
Humorous non-fiction **What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions** by Randall Munroe narrated by Wil Wheaton.
It consists of a series of questions on pop-sci and pop-culture, each answered in one or two paragraphs. The answers are hilarious in a dry-humored way.
An example question is: What would happen if you hit a baseball pitched at 90% of the speed of light?
Devolution by Max Brooks is fun on audio
The Passage my Justin Cronin the reader is my favorite narrator Scott Brick- it’s so fun and it’s a three book series!
