“I Am Pilgrim”, by Terry Hayes, is a highly-acclaimed thriller.
“Project Hail Mary”, by Andy Weiss, is an incredibly entertaining sci-fi read.
To Dance With Dragons by Jaq D. Hawkins
Read the great gatsby by f.scott Fitzgerald
I’m not usually into fantasy, but Leigh Bardugo’s “The Ninth House” is pretty good! (I like to read tarot, and it comes up in this series). It’s about magic, too, so that’s pretty fun. I had NO idea what it was about when I started, and I found myself fascinated.
If you’re coming off romance and want something different without it feeling like homework, I’d try fast, immersive reads in a few directions and see what clicks:
Dystopian / Speculative
• Station Eleven – quiet dystopia, beautifully written, very human.
• The Handmaid’s Tale – sharp, unsettling, and very readable.
• Never Let Me Go – slow-burn speculative fiction that sneaks up on you emotionally.
Thrillers (easy momentum)
• The Silent Patient – short chapters, strong hook, very bingeable.
• Gone Girl – if you somehow missed it, it’s still a page-turner.
Fantasy (accessible, not overwhelming)
• The Night Circus – romantic vibes but very different from typical romance.
• Mistborn – great intro to fantasy if you want plot and momentum without huge lore dumps.
Wildcard (often breaks slumps)
• Dark Matter – sci-fi thriller, short chapters, impossible to put down.
If you’re in a slump, don’t overthink it — pick something plot-driven and slightly outside your comfort zone, not a “literary challenge.” Once the habit is back, everything else follows.
