Looking for a book about wolves, in the vein of wildlife ecology, history, and modern politics. Specific focus on their presence in the western US would be a plus!
I really don’t want to read anything that tries to tug at my heartstrings bc I’m already such a bleeding heart for wildlife.
Especially trying to avoid books that highlight one specific wolf for a chapter that dies in a sad way. Sad stuff on a general level is fine (i.e. discussions of wolf poaching that doesn’t lend to the reader emotionally investing in the specific wolf that was killed.)

Big recommendation for the Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone series by Rick McIntyre who has lived and worked at Yellowstone for years tracking wolves since they were reintroduced. Four books in the series so far (The Rise of Wolf 8, The Reign of Wolf 21, The Redemption of Wolf 302, and The Alpha Female Wolf). They’re all very good.
There’s also The Wisdom of Wolves by Jim and Jamie Dutcher as well as The Hidden Life of Wolves by the same.
