I’m trying to get back into being an avid reader. Back in the day I would finish a book in like a week and now I struggle so much but I’m so exhausted being on my phone and scrolling so I am challenging myself to read more this coming year. I only read 5 books in 2025 but I want to at least triple that this new year. I just purchased the first dune book so that will be my first book of the year but I need more suggestions. I prefer sci-fi, political books, historical ( both fiction and non fiction ) , psychology thriller. I don’t mind romance but only if it’s lesbian ( sorry I’m tired of reading the same straight book over and over again )

I’d suggest When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill. I read it in January & I still think of it very often.
If you like YA thriller with morally gray characters, you can give Vengeful by V.E Schwab a chance. There’s a series but the first book is decently written and even works as a standalone(the conclusion is written such that it would end perfectly too)
Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series was really interesting to read but I’m a bit hesitant to recommend you the series since it does a lot of serious world building and if the premise of the book doesn’t catch your eye, might be a pain to work through all the slight jargon and stuff but I promise you it’s a good science fiction series.
I’m on my way to kickstarting my love for reading again, you’re not alone 🙂 remember you’re reading for yourself and nobody else so go ham with whatever you enjoy and start treading water again!
Anything Kristen Hannah. The Four Winds and The Nightengale are both AMAZING historical fiction books.
Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy (thriller)
The Wolf Tree by Laura McClusky (thriller)
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney (Thriller)
Isola by Allegra Goodwin (woman is marooned on a island in the 1400s)
Dune is a big one to start! So don’t beat yourself up if it takes up your whole month.
How about some shorter books to help you knock some down:
All Systems Read
I Who Have Never Known Men
Small Things Like These
Also, come join us over at r/52book (lots of people set goals of 1 or 2 books a month/12 or 26 books a year, not just 52!)
