I’m looking to get into a new fantasy series and I feel for me to really get invested in it has to follow these criteria.
- Philosophical depth: I want this series to make me think. Like really make me think life and death. The meaning of everything. What is real, what is consciousness, is god real, is there an afterlife blah blah blah (philosophy stuff) basically if this series is not making me border on having an existential crisis I’m not interested.
- Emotional depth: Moments of pure rage, deep sadness (like I want to cry reading this series), great leaps of joy, and perhaps some funny moments to lighten things. I just need the characters to feel very human and like I can emotional connect with them.
- Interesting atmosphere: Finally, a super cool atmosphere that is kind of surreal and weird. Think almost infinite yellow sands with weird orange bubble trees, blinding white craggy rocks by the sea, crystal caverns etc. (Obviously doesn't specifically have to have weird orange bubble trees etc. just a generally interesting and weird atmosphere and worldbuilding.)
Now with all this being said it doesn’t have to strictly follow all these criteria but I would like it to have each to some degree. Also if it’s like kind of sci-fi or blends other genres it’s okay, but I’d prefer to stick to fantasy.

You might like the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. It is an alternate history type world where non-humans “came out” after some genetic tinkering killed off a third of the human population in the 60s. Since then, the witches, vampires, and werewolves have taken over running the world/the US (there may or may not be elves, there are debates about their survival after mixing with humans for so long). There are leprechauns, fairies, and pixies in this world. You follow Rachel, a witch working for the non-human police as she quits the force to become a detective and is joined by a Vampire and Pixie.
1)The philosophy is rather light, but it does exist.
2) The series draws you in and you will absolutely experience a rollercoaster through the series (not so much within each book, but with the series as a whole).
3) The world has another realm tied to it called the Ever After. That’s where the demons live and it becomes a character unto itself as the series progresses.
I’m trying really hard not to spoil anything, but I truly think this series ticks your boxes!
