I want to read some Indian authors for now, do suggest me some good books. I am open to almost every genre except I just don't want read hardcore SMUT content.
Salman Rushdie’s Midnights Children is superb and a must read.

You should read Karukku by Bama. It’s a memoir, written in Tamil but there are English translations. It will give you a true understanding of the life of ordinary Indians. Similarly Joothan by Omprakash Valmiki. For a more modern writer try KR Meera’s Hangwoman, which is one of the most interesting novels from India in recent times.
Edit: Forgot Geetanjali Shree’s Tomb of Sand which was the first Indian novel to win an international Booker prize (in 2022).
