Looking for books about people facing off in deadly games. Preferably leaning into the horror and/or absurdity of the premise and featuring elements of observation (be it for entertainment or experimentation purposes).
Not looking for shock value, though I don’t mind it as long as it serves some narrative purpose. (Doing some digging into potential stories I found several incorporate SA and/or sex scenes that seem to only exist to disgust the reader)
Doesn’t need to be amazing prose, but competent and coherent would be appreciated. Preferably straying away from YA, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
Stories that fit the vibe I’m looking for
Hunger Games,
Ultimate Survivor Kaiji,
Alice in Borderland,
Battle Royale,
Circle,
Cube,
Maze Runner
On my list to check out
Dungeon Crawler Carl,
Crimson Labyrinth,
All of us Villains,
Chain Gang Allstars,
Tetradome Run
*edit I’m not sure how to fix the formatting. Mobile is weird.

The first book in the Red Rising trilogy is what immediately came to my mind.
The whole series is good too.
