I’m currently reading The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, and I’m finding the story entralling but wondering if something is lost on me. The trade reviews I read mentioned that it packs an emotional punch, but I’m about 200 pages in and haven’t noticed much exposition or development for Jun Do. Does it happen soon? I’m picking up on the “tall tale” elements of the story, the fascinating tidbits of culture and history, but the narrative feels a bit… toneless. Can anyone whose read the book and understands the acclaim tell me if I should be looking for something?
