    Hi all,

I’m looking for novels or novellas from the late 19th or early 20th century that explore neurotic characters, hidden sexuality, and deep psychological or subconscious themes. I have read works like:

    • The Virgin and the Gypsy – D.H. Lawrence
    • Carmilla – J. Sheridan Le Fanu
    • Professor Unrat – Heinrich Mann
    • Death in Venice – Thomas Mann
    • The Golem – Gustav Meyrink

I’m fascinated by literature that combines psychological depth, decadence, and subtle erotic or taboo motifs. I know that every literary tradition has its hidden gems (novels by Jiří Karásek in Czech literature for instance), but I’m struggling to discover them beyond the more famous examples.

I’d love recommendations of works that feature:

    • Neurotic or psychologically intense characters
    • Latent sexuality or erotic tension
    • Decadence, subconscious motives, or introspective obsessions

Any hidden gems from any national literature would be hugely appreciated!
