Up to you whether you go by release date (I did and think it’s the way to go) or switch it up and read them “chronologically” but they’re all fantastic books.

A little off course from Lonesome Dove but after I finished that I dove into Pillars of the Earth. You end up feeling close to the characters and root for some as you do in Lonesome Dove.

Pillars of Earth by Ken Follett. Only thing that was able to fill the Lonesome Dove shaped hole in my heart. An epic that follows different storylines that eventually converge like LD. About the construction of a cathedral so also scratches that historical itch.
Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa left me notably in awe like LD but much shorter and very different topic.
If you want another epic tho I would recommend East of Eden, River God by Wilbur Smith, also by Wilbur: When the Lion Feeds, and the all time classic SHOGUN!!!
