The one that stands out the most to me is, unfortunately, Dracula by Bram Stoker. I understand that the writing style when it was written was very different than today's writing, and I didn't have too many issues with that. My problem with it came in when Van Helsing showed up with endless monologues for every question or statement made. It got to the point where, when I would get to another Van Helsing part, I would skim over it because of how much he would drone on. I think he liked the sound of his voice a bit too much…

    1. The Da Vinci Code. Got given it as a gift at the height of it’s hype. Absolute trash.

      Flowers for Algernon.

It was a good book, but it gets hyped up. In my opinion way too much., not saying I would not recommend it but it’s not even in my top five or 10

    3. I was gonna say Dracula too, as I’m approaching the last few pages. So much filler and forgettable characters.

After having been impressed by Frankenstein, Dracula was such a let down.

    4. American Psycho.

Couldn’t do it. One of the rare books I’ve not finished. Frenetic pace just did me in.

American Gods. I really struggled through it. None of it seemed to hit me right. Definitely my largest expectation to experience I’ve had book wise.

    6. Think Again by Jacqueline Wilson. I was so excited there was going to be a sequel to the ‘Girls’ books (*side note – are these popular outside the UK?!*), but it was ….meh.

Another one was The Power by Naomi Alderman. The concept sounded so cool but it felt muddled and flat to me.

    7. I mean, most of them? “Keepers” are rare like they always have been. But I read a lot, and I read random stuff from the library shelf all the time. But I’m pretty easy to please, honestly. Also, my disappointment is generally pretty mild, as my expectations are usually low.

The Shelters of Stone in Jean Auel’s Earth’s Children (Clan of the Cave Bear) series. I kept waiting for something to happen besides biblical begat like introductions to different caves. I never felt like enough happened beyond that to justify reading what felt to me like 700+ pages of introductions to various people.

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy. Soo many 5 star reviews on Goodreads but I was bored to tears. I forced myself to finish but thought about quitting many times throughout. A friend said the end was satisfying. Nope. It was one of the last books I read in 2025 and I’m still annoyed I wasted time reading it. Can’t trust those 5 star reviews on Goodreads 😓

Buffalo Hunter Hunter. I couldn’t work up any feeling for the characters and the last part of the book was such a left turn, I just skimmed through it. A lot of people raved about it, but it just didn’t do it for me.
