I’m looking for “modern classic” type books, set post-1990 and written by queer men. Basically gay millennial fiction that has great prose.

I’ve read some of the commonly recommended gay classics but most of them seem to be set in the 1940’s or during the AIDS crisis. I’m looking for something more contemporary.

Books that I’ve enjoyed in the past include:
    – anything by Christopher Isherwood (A Single Man, Christopher and His Kind…)
    – Maurice by E.M. Forster
    – At Your Own Risk by Derek Jarman
    – Becoming a Man by Paul Monette
    – The Temple by Stephen Spender
    – At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O’Neill
    – Man’s World by Rupert Smith
    – Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman

What I’m looking for is something with a similar vibe and literary quality but set more recently (and preferably not in the US). Any recommendations?

    1. – *On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous* by Ocean Vuong
      – *Real Life* by Brandon Taylor

    2. Open, Heaven by Seán Hewitt. Takes place in the UK in the early 2000s. Has really strong, lyrical writing.
