I was never a history person. There are things that people might think are very common knowledge but I have no clue about. Things like WWI, WWII, the soviet union, the Roman Empire, Alexander the great, Ancient Egypt etc

My level of knowledge in those subjects is weaker than one can imagine. I never took history in school and never bothered to read about it, so assume I literally know 0 about the subject. What are some well written history books that arent a bore to read but also provide a good foundation for the topic they're discussing.

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (version 2.0 just came out). It’s a really good read, a great overview of so many things, and might help you narrow down what you want to dive in to, to learn more about.
