I appreciated that Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides highlighted the destruction of Smyrna. Its portrayal of the Detroit riots, not so much.

I recommend Abir Mukherjee’s Wyndham and Banerjee detective series, set in a richly described 1920s Calcutta. The first in the series is *A Rising Man.*
