I’m a 30 yo male and I really enjoy the MeatEater podcast, especially when they talk about frontiersmen, long hunters and the history of people moving west before it was civilized, and lately I’ve been seeking out movies and shows that have that same feel to them. I loved True Grit, The Hateful Eight and Train Dreams. Yellowstone was pretty good too. I’d say the closest thing to what I’m looking for however is the mini series 1883. A book or series that captures what life was like back then with all the dangers of being a pioneer while also telling a good story. I don’t really want anything educational. Just something cozy and adventurous. Any recommendations?

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is basically the gold standard for this stuff – super brutal and atmospheric. Also check out Lonesome Dove if you haven’t already, it’s like the ultimate western epic and has that same gritty pioneer vibe you’re looking for
