I always thought books were like the plague. At school, we only ever had books that didn't interest me at all. But now I've listened to an audiobook of “Project Hail Mary” and it somehow sparked my interest in finally getting into reading.

So my question is, what are some good books in the sci-fi/hard-sci-fi genre or ones where the characters try to outsmart each other that can turn my spark into a wildfire? They can be popular or lesser-known, I'm happy with either.

    1. calculating the stars (lady astronaut series) was good. Little feminist / racial justice too if that interests you
A gift of time is excellent, an all time favorite.
Pandora’s Star by Peter f Hamilton is hefty but excellent

    2. John Scalzi’s *Interdependency* series is court politics and internecine battles in an outer-space sci-fi setting. Most of its main characters are bad-ass women.

The first book is **The Collapsing Empire**.

Be aware it contains considerable expletive language.

    3. Murderbot. It’s quippy, people thinking on their feet fast and cleverly, trying to outwit big corporations, a very snarky spaceship ai, and it’s a series of novellas (to start with) so each one can be short. Plus the audiobook exists!
