even as an adult, Tamora pierce is one of my favorite authors – I especially like her circle universe books. I am looking for similar books that are high fantasy, preferably take place in an earlier time period (no cars or electricity) and have unusual and creative depiction of magic (this is part of what I like about pierces work, especially the circle books). I don’t want anything that is focused on wars or battles.

ya novels are fine but I read fast and a lot of them end up being too short unless it’s a series – I started dragonfruit last night and I really like it but i am already almost 25% done with it.

his dark materials by Phillip Pullman are some of my other top books of all time – I love his creativity.

Try out [The Priory of the Orange Tree](https://bookshare.me/?q=9781408883457) by Samantha Shannon!

There are some battles, but the accompanying books [Day of Fallen Night](https://bookshare.me/?q=9781408883457) and [Among the Burning Flowers](https://bookshare.me/?q=9781526686824) build a fabulous world!

Alternatively, have you looked into the sequels to the His Dark Materials trilogy? The first is called [La Belle Sauvage](https://bookshare.me/?q=9780375815300) and is a prequel to His Dark Materials. The final book just got released!

Have you checked out Kristen Britain and her Green Rider series? I also grew up on Tamora Pierce (still one of my favorite authors of all time), and really appreciate uncommon magic systems. The magic in Green Rider is different, in my opinion, because it’s attached to a brooch and not to one’s genetics or species of origin.

I’m not sure if this quite fits— the specifics of the world’s magic isn’t really the focus of the book— but as a fellow Circle of Magic fan, I recommend my favorite book: [The Hands of the Emperor](https://share.google/ID8EUnwDjqkoB35LB) by Victoria Goddard. It’s a beautifully written, slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships.
