I feel like I’ve hit a bit of a reading slump, or maybe I’ve just become an old grump 🤔. Nothing seems to truly excite me these days!
Books I’ve loved the past year:
• Howl’s Moving Castle
• Piranesi
• The Binding
• My Friends the Poppy War
• Empire of the Vampire
• The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
• Demian
• The Undocumented Americans (non-fiction)
I love fantasy, especially when it’s atmospheric or emotionally rich. I also “read”a lot of audiobooks, because I spend many hours commuting to and from work (😭) so a great narrator can make all the difference for me.
Has anyone else ever felt like their reading tastes shifted as they got older? Or like you just can’t find books that spark you the same way anymore? Would love some recs or commiseration ❤️📚

I’ve been feeling similarly. Nothing is grabbing my attention right now, I honestly feel a bit burnt out from reading.
Every book I read in the first six months of last year was so mediocre to outright bad that I thought I may never find a book I loved again. Then every book I read in the last six months was an absolute banger lol. Not sure how closely our tastes align, but these were my favourite reads last year:
– In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune
– Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
– The Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
– Alchemised by SenLinYu
– You Weren’t Meant to Be Human by Andrew Joseph White
– Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll find another book to love, it just may take some time.
Your reading list does not suggest you’re a grump.
Try 11/22/63 by S King – absolute page turner with serious emotional notes.
Have you considered audiobooks to get a new angle on reading?
