I want a book/series that takes place in more contemporary times (like 90s to present day) that has a female detective. I'd like her to be a flawed/imperfect protagonist: I don't find perfection relatable.
The Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffith! She’s not officially a detective but a forensic archeologist, but fully imperfect and the mysteries are really well written.

The In Death series by JD Robb. Trigger warning: she suffered CSA and it takes her a while to work through it. But it’s not a sad, depressing series. She has a sense of humor and there are some fun side characters.

Maybe this is too obvious, but Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone books, starting with *A Is for Alibi*

Laura Lippman’s Tess Monaghan series
