Hellooooo readers of Reddit! Okay so—I graduated college yesterday, and my brain is fatigued. Sooo much reading and writing the past few months. But I want to read for pleasure today for the first time in ages. I love magical realism and wonder, can anyone recommend an author or book in this genre that is worthwhile and has substance and a great story, but is light and easy to read? Thanks! 🙂

    1. For a blend of myth and reality, ‘American Gods’ by Neil Gaiman is a book I find myself recommending time and again. Gaiman’s tale explores the gods of old myths and their struggle to survive in modern America, a place of new gods like technology and media.

    2. It’s not really magical realism and more like realistic magic, but Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is really wonder-ful

Anything by Maggie Stiefvater – they are more real with elements of magic and focus on relationships between characters – All the Crooked Saints, The Scorpio Races, The Raven Cycle

Macunaima: The Hero Without Any Character by Mario de Andrade. It’s a classic Brazilian fantasy novel comprised of different Amazonian myths and folktales woven together. The Engel translation has wonderful footnotes that explain all the lore.
