I don’t like most romances because I’m not interested in cutesy stuff but I find toxic dynamics really fascinating. Are there books where the main romance or friendship have a troubled dynamic? Gender of characters doesn’t matter to be but please no stories of domestic abuse or good girl/ bad boy cliches or milquetoast ‘enemies to lovers’ that’s just bickering rivals or a guy harassing the main girl until she falls in love. I’m not sure if I’ve read a book that has exactly what I’m looking for but an example of friendship would be like naruto and sasuke from the naruto anime who are obsessed with each other but are on opposing sides for half the manga. Or for romance, something like Evelyn Hugo and Celia from TSHOEH or Daisy and Billy from djats. For dark academia, I’d say these violent delights or Bunny have the sort of thing I’m interested in.
