    Hi all,

I run a bookclub and this year I would like to do a graphic novel one month and another month I would like to do a short book of poems. Mainly because when I raised these in 2024 I got a lot of protests. Last year I skipped them but this year I want to push my readers a bit out of their comfort zones!

I’ll come back for reccs for poems (but if you have any feel free to pop them in the comments).

This ask is for graphic novel recommendations for an older crowd who have never read a graphic novel in their life (apart from me). Our oldest member is pushing 70, and most are resistant to the genre due to misconceptions. Half do audio books, and aren’t interested in spooky or superhero stuff.

I don’t mind a light read or humour but a deeper layer or meaning would be good for this crowd to dissect in discussion. Stand alone is likely best instead of a series. Something to ease the genre on to them but make them want to explore it more on their own (some are a bit snobby and against graphic novels as a proper genre for bookclub!).

I’m doing research online as well but thought I’d ask here too. Thanks in advance.

Persepolis is perfect for this – it’s autobiographical, deals with serious themes about growing up during the Iranian Revolution, and even the snobbiest book club members usually come around once they realize how much depth it has

The art style is simple black and white so it won’t overwhelm newbies, and there’s tons to discuss about identity, politics, and coming of age
