I'm looking for books originally written in French in the psychological horror genre–where the main character slowly loses touch with reality.

I absolutely love cerebral books that make you think deeply about the themes and symbolism. Extra bonus points if the book has beautiful language with difficult vocabulary.

Some stories I've really loved in the past include Le Horla (Maupassant), La Moustache (Carrère), and Chanson Douce (Slimani). I'm looking for something that closely fits with these other works.

Check out “L’Adversaire” by Emmanuel Carrère if you haven’t already – it’s this disturbing deep dive into a guy living a complete lie and how it all unravels. The psychological breakdown is chef’s kiss and Carrère’s prose is gorgeous but dense

Also maybe try “Les Particules élémentaires” by Houellebecq, though it’s more existential dread than straight horror
