I'm chasing a book where the main character could be considered 'down and out', out of luck, or just in a slump. They could have been really good at something in the past and make a comeback or maybe they start from rock bottom and manage to build themselves up. Anything that you think my fit that description would be great!

I just recommended this in another thread but: The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic for a reason.
Candice Fox Crimson Lake books. Two protagonists, one an ex-cop in a bad situation, the other an ex-con, and they both become PIs. For sure a comeback for them both. Book 3 solves their individual original issues too.
YOu don’t need to read them all, but they were so good I did.
