I’ve always been a big fan of monster romance stories—Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney Princess movie—but I find that many of the ones I’ve discovered so far are too smutty and not romantic enough, and also have obnoxious writing styles. Sensuality and spicy scenes DO NOT bother me; I just also want a book that has a beautiful love story that doesn’t read like amateur fanfiction. Got any recommendations? I prefer stories with female main characters, by the way (regardless if the love interest is male or female).

Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians series gets memed to death but honestly the writing is solid and the romance development is actually really sweet. The alien dudes aren’t just mindless beasts and there’s genuine emotional connection building

Also try T Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead – more gothic horror vibes but the monster elements are chef’s kiss and the prose is gorgeous

Since you love Beauty and The Beast, check out Bryony and Roses by T.Kingfisher for a well written retelling of that story.

It’s an ace romance (so no sex scenes) but it’s sapphic and sweet with a strong current of horror: Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell.

Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson is a contemporary paranormal romance between a woman and a loch ness monster shifter. Most of the action is when he’s in human form but there IS a spicy scene where he’s partially shifted.
