Two of my all-time favorite books are Hild and Menewood by Nicola Griffith. I felt totally transported to another world, immersed, and the characters are so compelling. I also really loved Wolf Hall and the Kristin Lavransdatter series by Sigrid Undset. I want to read more historical fiction, but I'm also a pretty terrible snob when it comes to literary style. I only got about 20 pages into Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth (sorry, but it reads like something you'd buy at the airport) and, while I liked the writing in Lauren Groff's Matrix, it just didn't feel believably medieval, if that makes sense.
Any recommendations for a snooty girl who wants to be mentally transported to a faraway time?
