I’m looking for book recommendations that feature a character who has strong personal biases, prejudices, or even outright dislike for someone, but still chooses to act fairly or compassionately toward them because of a sense of duty, honor, or ethical responsibility.
Two examples from the top of my head that captured this for me recently:
The Lords of Discipline, where “The Bear,” despite being racist and personally disliking a Black cadet, still wants him to succeed because he believes it’s his responsibility to train him well and help see him through to graduation.
An episode of House where House treats a death-row inmate he personally despises and who is set to die at the hands of the state anyway, but still does everything he can medically because it’s his job and his code.
Any recommendations that fit this theme would be appreciated, especially if it applies to the main character.
