Suggest something for someone that hates advanced writing

Not sure how else to title this post. I'm not usually a big reader but there have been times in my life I've enjoyed it. I want to try to get back into it but I've noticed one thing about my reading style, I hate writing that feels pretentious. For example, I'd much rather read something like: "the wooden chair was broken" than "the seating apparatus of wooden origin was a shade of feces". So I guess to put it another way, I like simple writing. I'd love any suggestions for titles like this in the sci Fi or fantasy genres. To give an example of a book I tried reading recently that I did not like the writing style of was Red Rising, to give an example of a book I like would be Star wars path of destruction.
