Book that combines estranged family and love-hate sibling relations

I know the title isn't very clear, what I mean is this:

Fantasy book would be lovely, as that's what I usually read;

The MC is estranged from their family due to either bad actions or some perceived imperfection, and they end up getting separated. In my mind, it'd be like family members having to leave to war, but any other way of family separation works.

Then the family and MC reunite, with the MC having become a complete and competent person, with great sacrifice to themselves. That leads to a very painful process where the family come to terms with the MC's complete personality and ability to defend themselves, and the MC slowly forgiving (or not) their family.
