I dig books and films about someone encountering a completely different society from that early period of globalisation when the world wasn’t as familiar to everyone as it is now.
Old BBC travel docs featuring some weedy articulate privately educated guy in East Asia (think Michael Palin), or books like Beach, Vídeo Night in Kathmandu, to an extent even Shantaram…just a few that spring to mind but I’m sure there are better. I even get that feeling watching early 2000s top gear episodes set in Japan.
I feel immense nostalgia for that time. I don’t know if it’s the relative naivety of the protagonist or the feelings of the exotic and unknown.
Any recommendations that fit the bill welcome.
