Listen, Iām not being dramaticāokay, Iām being a little dramaticābut I am BEGGING for romance recommendations that donāt make me want to fling myself into the sun.
I need beautifully written romance. Give me poetic prose. Give me The Song of Achilles level writing but make it romance. I want descriptions so vivid I can taste them, body language so detailed I feel like Iām there, and psychology so realistic I forget these are fictional people.
The Problem: Iāve been burned. Repeatedly. Archerās Voice? Cute, sure, but reading it felt like eating plain toast when I ordered a five-course meal. The writing was just too simple, not enough depth. And donāt even get me started on the psychological realismāor lack thereof. (My opinion, it was cute but had to force read it though to explain myself.)
What my romance-starved soul craves:
1) Writing thatās chefās kiss gorgeousālyrical, evocative, the works
2) Characters with actual depth (let them be messy! complicated! real!)
3) YEARNING (the good stuff, the pining that makes your chest ache)
4) Spice with substance (plot matters, people!)
5) That āIām a playboy but actually just desperately touch-starved and want someone to love ME, not just my bodyā energy in the male lead
6) Unexpected pregnancy or cowboy tropes? Sign me up.
Hard passes:
1) Cheating (absolutely not)
2) āDark romanceā that is just š
3) PWP masquerading as novels (AO3 exists for a reason)
For reference: Reckless by Elsie Silver hit the spot with its decent prose and detail. Really cute āŗļø
Anyway š
Iāve wasted SO MUCH MONEY on TikTok book recs. Some were fine. Others? Icebreaker gave me such an visceral ick from the FMC that I literallyāand I mean literallyāthrew it into my fireplace.(MY OPINION BTW, some maybe like it. Me personallyā¦.No.)
So please, Iām on my knees here, save me from this literary wasteland! What are your best beautifully-written romance recs?
(P.S. If you recommend another bland TikTok book I might actually perish)
