I'm a very visual person, and when I'm looking for a good read, I'm swayed by beautiful artwork and design. Sometimes, this pays off.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is both beautifully written and beautiful on a shelf!

But sometimes, it does not. I gave up on Amafi Curse last night. Was on the hunt for a good witchy read, and this one had some solid reviews AND and amazing cover – but this one did not deliver.

Would love to hear of others that made a pick by "judging a book by its cover", and it totally paid off!

The Debt to Pleasure by John Lanchester. Found a used hard cover in a second hand shop and it did not disappoint. The cover art features a still life painting of peaches and grapes.

    2. I’ve had that happen a few times. Sometimes a clean or slightly odd cover makes me think the publisher trusted the writing enough not to oversell it. I picked up The Night Circus years ago mostly because of how it looked and ended up enjoying the mood a lot. Other times the cover promises more than the story can deliver, which is always disappointing. It feels like a quiet gamble that occasionally works out.
