Hello, I am looking for some book recommendations please. I mostly read dystopian, sci-fi, and fantasy. Although lately I've been on a bit of a fantasy romance kick as fourth wing opened up that genre to me. I would love some more Dystopian fantasy book recommendations to add to my list, Or any more worlds with magical schools like HP or Fourth Wing as these kind of fascinate me.

I've also heard that finding a "booktuber" with similar taste is a good way to get recommendations so if anyone knows of one with similar taste that would be awesome as well.

Here are some of my all time favorites and recent reads. I'll admit that most if not all of them are your generic books that many love, so I'm looking to expand that.

Thank you in advance, and also sorry in advance if the formatting sucks. I don't really post to reddit so IDK how this works.

    Recent reads:

    • Fourth Wing series, Rebecca Yarros – felt like a more violent/dystopian harry potter and I loved it despite the angsty YA feel at times.
    • Chain Gang Allstars, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah – great Dystopian
    • Fae Isles Series, Lisette Marshhall – Liked but didn't love it

All time Favorites in no particular order:

    • The Count of Monte Cristo
    • Ready player 1 & 2
    • 1984, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New world
    • LOTR
    • Harry Potter
    • The Witcher Series
    • Enders Game Series
    • 11/22/63
    • Snow Crash
    • Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy
    • Alice in Wonderland

    1. *The Magicians* by Lev Grossman (first of a trilogy) sounds right up your alley! It’s a dark magical school setting and fun writing.

N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy is excellent dystopian fantasy, but it can take a little more effort than some books — innovative worldbuilding, multiple storylines, pretty long.

    2. Here are a few dystopian books you could try: The Red rising series (YA school vibe, but violent), The Scythe trilogy (YA, some violence), The Handmaid’s Tale, The Road, Parable of the Sower.

    3. I like quite of few of your all time favorites- an excellent dystopian sci-fi read is Dungeon Crawler Carl!! It’s got 7 books in the series, they start out string and they just keep getting better as they go on.

You don’t list what you didn’t like so I don’t know if you’ve tried some of these authors and it wasn’t s good fit. I’ve given you a starter brain dump. If any of these particularly appeal or don’t, let me know and I’ll make additional suggestions accordingly.

The Hunger Games, dystopian YA movies as well

Divergent series by Veronica Roth, more dystopian YA, movie tie-in

Jim Butcher, Dresden Files, first book Storm Front for urban fantasy. Dint base the books in that one season TV series. It wasn’t true to the books.

If you liked the TV show Firefly and its movie /serenity read the books, first book Big Damn Hero. If you’re unfamiliar with the show go watch. Or read, both are great.

William Gibson Sprawl series, first book Neuromancer. Sci-fi

Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series first book Magic Bites, urban fantasy. Anything they write is great but this seems to fit your style based on your likes. Also new series Breach Wars, first book, The Inheritance. Can’t recommend highly enough. All their books have humor, some more than others but these aren’t a light as some of the other series.

David Brin’s Earth for sci-fi. His other books see good as well but this is my favorite followed by Sundiver and Startide Rising which are in the same universe as each other but separate in time.

Shakespeare’s The Tempest for classic fantasy

Martha Wells Murderbot Diaries, first book All Systems Red

Richelle Mead Vampire Academy series, for YA dark school setting. Also Her series on a succubus Georgina Kincaid first book Succubus Blues

Terry Pratchett Discworld, first book The Color of Magic, fantasy satire

L.E. Modesitt Jr The Grand Illusion series, first book Isolate. Unlike many I’m not a huge fan of some of his other series although I like the Imager books.

Anne Bishop Ephemera series, first book Sebastian. Fantasy with wild world building, MC in first book is an incubus but he doesn’t prey on people.

Jean Johnson Theirs Not to Reason Why series, first book A Soldiers Duty, military sci-fi. She doesn’t get much attention now as she hasn’t been writing for a few years due to health issues bit she also writes great mainstream fantasy. I can highly recommend all her books.

David Weber is known for his Honor Harrington books, which are space opera and which I love, first book On Basilisk Station but less known I think is his Out of the Dark series he co-authored, sort of like movie Independence Day. First book Out of the Dark.

You liked Snowcrash, read his book of an urban alleged eco terrorist titled Zodiac. His other books are great as well but this one reminds me of Snow Crash in how it’s sometimes zany and always in your face characters.
