Hello everybody! Does anyone have recommendations for historical fiction that has a prominent plot line involving a romance between a wealthy/higher-class woman and a poor/lower-class man? I am not looking for period romance novels, but rather something that is more "serious" historical fiction, with a romantic subplot.

I noticed that while I tend to read a lot of fiction that explores cross-class relationships and the resulting conflicts, these plotlines are much more commonly a higher-class man and a lower-class woman. It is okay if the two characters do not end up together in the end. I also do not have preferences on era/setting.

I have already read and loved The Architect's Apprentice by Elif Shafak, which is an example of the type of plotline I'm looking for, but I'm not aware of any other historical fiction along these lines. In addition, other historical fiction I've enjoyed that do not have relevant plotlines but give an idea of my general reading taste are Susan Vreeland's Luncheon of the Boating Party, Sarah Dunant's Blood and Beauty duology, and Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall series.

    Thanks for your help, guys!

I’m trying to remember if The French Executioner by C.C. Humphreys has that or not. I know there are several scenes between lower class man and higher class woman, and it’s not romantic but I’m not sure if it’s quite right. Would be less of the main plot and more of a genesis of the plot
