Check out Dennis Lehane’s work! He has a series about two PIs (the Kenzie & Gennaro series). The movie Gone, Baby, Gone was based on one of the books in the series (though it actually wasn’t my favourite of the series). His books are very gritty, in a good way.
Mystic River and Shutter Island are also amazing novels by him.
