My son is 6 turning 7 and a strong reader, I’m looking to get him into more advanced books. He’s currently getting through the I survived series which he loves and in particular he was a big fan of I survived the black plague. He sometimes asks me to tell him stories and usually I tell him stories of monster hunters (which he stars in) or brave knights. I think he would like a series of books about knights/ monster hunters or other do gooders with fantasy elements.

So hit me with your best suggestions, before making this post the book that came to mind is how to train your dragon so I might check that out and see if he likes it but give me your thoughts on how a 6 year old would enjoy it.

For reference his favorite book is Captain underpants and he’s reading through Hilo series currently.

How to Train Your Dragon is a great call. Funny, fast, not too intense.

      Other solid picks:

      * **Dragon Masters** – short chapters, dragons, lots of action.
      * **The Kingdom of Wrenly** – knights, magic, easy reads.
      * **The Last Firehawk** – classic quest vibes.

If he loves Captain Underpants and Hilo, humor + action > deep lore. Short chapters help a lot.

      Lloyd Alexander – Prydain Series

Ursula Vernon – Hamster Princess or Dragonbreath series or Castle Hangnail

      James Thurber – 13 Clocks

“Rowan of Rin” by Emily Rodda, “Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher” by Bruce Coville, “the hobbit”, obviously…

There’s a great graphic novel series— the first is Giants, Beware! about a young girl who wants to be a giant slayer. It’s a fun story with good characters and a nice message. Has two sequels I believe.
