Something that resonated with me in Half His Age and I'm Glad My Mom Died is how Jennette McCurdy nails unhealthy coping mechanisms, especially the shopping addiction, which compared to what is usually discussed (drug addiction) in terms of addiction.

I'm yearning to read stories about phone, social media, shopping, instant gratification, gaming addiction, and what it means to feel helpless against self-hatred and emptiness in our current media and technological landscape.

I imagine the story that would hit the spot would have to be recent to feel relatable to the hellscape we live in. I think it's part of why McCurdy's depiction of it hits the spot.

I need the character to live in a world of TikTok, predatory and relentless advertising, soul-sucking loneliness and class disparity.

And I'm looking for a work of fiction or a biographical work, but please no other non-fiction (self-help, educational, essays etc).

Are there other stories like this out there?
