Hi, I am not sure about the title to give to this post but let me explain.
I am a history nerd and normally I almost only read non fiction history books (and a lot of them). Last year I wanted a change and started to lurk here. I got fascinated about a few often recommended books I found here. And you will see they have quite a few common points, I would like something in the same atmosphere, feel… hard to describe what it is but I guess you will see the books show a pattern.
I think I like this out of time feel, one person alone literally or metaphorically, strong feelings with a lingering doom but at the same time very poetic. I guess the philosophical aspect is also something I enjoy there. I am not attached to a genre or type of book, could even be non fiction I guess.
Books I read this year and loved :
– the road – Cormac McCarthy
– flowers for algernon – Daniel Keyes
– a short stay in hell – Steven L. Peck
– piranesi – Susanna Clarke
– I who have never known men – Jacqueline Harpman
Thanks in advance for your suggestions, and thanks again for your indirect past suggestions.

I have read and enjoyed all your examples, except “A Short Stay in Hell” which I should perhaps check out. From my side, I can wholeheartedly The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Kundera more generally, as well as the Stranger by Camus.
Stoner is your answer. I also found the denouement in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin satisfying.
