I kept seeing Lonesome Dove being raved about on Reddit, and was actually kind of reluctant to pick it up because of how long it was and for the fact that I’ve never been super into westerns. WOW was I wrong! Honestly this book absolutely captivated me. I felt so attached to the characters and so invested in their story. I can’t think of another book in recent memory that was this spectacular. The writing style flowed beautifully and had depth without being too wordy. The plot was paced so well and did not drag at all for being almost 1000 pages. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book and I know I will be thinking about it for a long time. Loved it!!!
Now I’m considering picking up the sequel but am seeing mixed reviews. I can’t decide if I should read a “palate cleanser” before diving into book 2? What do y’all think? Is the rest of the series worth reading right away? Should I let LD be a standalone masterpiece? Would love to hear other people’s thoughts.
Side note – I am probably also feeling mixed feelings about book 2 since Gus won’t be in it and he was my absolute favorite literary character in such a long time!

Definitely a really great read
It’s one of those books that gets a lot of hype and deserves all of it and then some.
Augustus McRae is probably my favorite literary character of all time. So many great quotes.
