I'm looking for something like Baudolino or the Name of the Rose (both by Umberto Eco). I'm currently reading Chretien de Troyes' Arthurian romances but I prefer the modern novel.
I also am interested in books set in "late antiquity" europe (I guess like the buried giant, which I love). So it doesn't have to be exact.
I also love The Once and Future King, and I enjoyed reading Nicked, the Bright Sword and the Western Wind. Pillars of the Earth was entertaining….but looking for something with more depth.
Please do not suggest Game of Thrones lol I did not like it. But I'm open to fantasy for sure. Thank you!

“To Calais, in Ordinary Time” by James Meek is set in 14th century plague times. Really neat story, and some language that takes a while to get used to.
Edit: So, late mediaeval, not the early bit you wanted
