I'm reading Voice of the Ocean by Kelsey Impicciche, and I'm noticing a lot of little errors in the writing. I've heard how booktok mass consumption/production of books has had negative impacts on the industry, is this part of it? Are they rushing so hard to make books that they don't bother to proofread them? What is happening in publishing to allow so many errors to go through into the final product?
It's a lot of little slip ups, like the mermaids say the humans are invading their "land" when it's been established they have no land and they were previously saying "waters". Silly breathing mechanics like mentioning the mermaids' lungs/chests when they are underwater and would be using their gills. The mermaids clapping their hands underwater. It's like the author forgets her characters are underwater, which I can understand, but why wasn't this addressed and corrected during production? Is that the editors job? A beta reader? Is the demand for quantity allowing for this kind of lapse in quality?
When I started reading this book I did tell myself "I'll just turn off my brain and enjoy it" but I take that as turning off my brain for shaky plot mechanics, trope usage, and corny dialog. Not straight up errors in word choice and logic.
