    So, I've never liked reading/writting.

When I was little, my dad always preassured me to. He'd buy books and books for me even though I told him I don't like it. To this day he keeps saying that I should read, that I'm missing out and that books make you smarter. (I've read maybe 8 books in my entire life, and I can't remember anything)

The thing is, I find it painfully hard to do. I may read an entire page and not actually process any words (I'm 26, so I can't blame it on social media or my cellphone since I didn't have those when I was younger). I'd get lost in metaphors and not understand when the writter meant to say something symbolic or if it was something factual. I'd read a description of a character or a place, imagine it, and then get pissed off when the next thing contradicted anything I'd pictured.

I used to rub the fact that I hate reading in my dad's face, only to make him shut up about it. I think I still do this.

I've always been more "visual", I LOVE movies. I love the symbolism and I am an amazing critic. I know a lot about color, shots, acting, etc. So I used to find comfort in knowing that I at least could do that with stories and media.

But in this day and age… I am really sad because I feel like I AM missing out. I'd love to be able to just pick up a book and finish it in a week. Read while commuting and learn more about writting. I just can't… I feel so stupid and I'd really hate to have my dad saying "I told you so" to my face. I don't want to give him the satisfaction.

Anyways all this to say… I want to start reading. I'll probably need something "easy". I love horror, heart-wrenching love stories, philosophy and feminism. Any suggestion is welcomed.

Also if you have any recommendations about my problems with reading… I'd very much appreciate it.

Hi, I see a lot of myself in you. I discovered a passion for reading a few years ago! Before, like you, I couldn’t read at all; the words just flowed and I couldn’t remember anything. For me, the turning point was that, once school ended, I started deciding what to read. The problem for me was being forced to read books that didn’t interest me; for example, now I’ve discovered a passion for thrillers ☺️. I’d recommend starting with something small that you think you might like and experimenting until you find your genre!

    2. Try an audiobook!! They help me read when I don’t want to physically pick up a book.
